  Q: What is a sneakerhead?

  A: updated (08/02/2012)

This term refers to someone who is an avid collector of sneakers, or views his interest in sneakers as a hobby. Up until the late 1970's, sneakers (trainers in the UK) were viewed as a functional item worn to participate in sporting activities. By the 1980's sneakers had become a fashion item. In Europe - Adidas, Fila and Puma - sneakers had become a fashion item of the "casual subculture" of the UK, in the early 1980's. In the US, basketball hi-tops became a fashion item of the hip-hop music scene; with sneakers such as, the Nike Air Jordan and Nike Dunk, being sort after shoes. Present day, manufacturers such as Adidas and Nike have tapped into the sneakerhead mentality, re-releasing their classic sneakers of the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. Quite often - Adidas, Nike, Reebok etc - will release a limited amount of these shoes, therefore maintaining their collectability and desirability.
