A Adidas have always sponsored prominent athletes, tennis players and football players; and named footwear after the most successful sportsmen and women. However, Adidas have recently began to sponsor modern sports; like skateboarding. Skateboarding shoes are popular as casualwear - due to the sports 'cool' credentials - and most of the original 'skate' shoe manufacturers were small independent companies; making the sport ripe for 'takeover' by a large company with a huge marketing budget; like Adidas. Professional skateboarders who have been sponsored by Adidas and are a part of the Adidas skateboarding team are: Art Neroza, Benny Fairfax, Dennis Durrant, Günes Özdogan, Mark Gonzales, Dennis Busenitz, Jake Donnelly, Kevin Lowry, Klaus Bohms, Lucas Puig, Mark Suciu, Miles Silvas, Na-Kel Smith, Nester Judkins, Petr Horvat, Raul Navarro, Silas Baxter-Neal, Pete Eldridge, and Rodrigo Tx. Adidas have released skateboarding shoes named after Dennis Busenitz and Lucas Puig. Adidas have also released a skateboard version of the Stan Smith sneaker - their best selling shoe - with a grippy vulcanised outsole.
