Q: In relation to shoes, what is moisture wicking?

  A: updated (07/03/2012)

One of the major issues with footwear is sweaty feet; which can lead to fungus and bacterial problems. One of the solutions to this problem is "moisture wicking", sometimes simply referred to as "wicking". The process of wicking is to create an inner lining/layer of material which will draw/transfer sweat from the foot and pass it onto the outer layer, which will evaporate the moisture - thus leaving the foot dry and free of bacterial buildup. The purpose of any inner lining - for shoes - is to provide comfort but also to have wicking properties. Traditional materials - such as cotton - tend to have poor wicking capability; it is the new man made fibers - such as polyester - which contain the best wicking properties.
