Adidas ZX 500: the first shoe of the ZX series (1984)

The Adidas ZX 500 is a running shoe that was released in 1984, and it was one of the first shoes released in the ZX Series; an earlier ZX shoe was the ZX 400 SPZL. The ZX Series is notable for introducing midfoot technologies - like the Torsion System - that have contributed to athletes setting new world records in a range of long distance running events. The ZX 500 was released to coincide with the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games; a time when interest in running and running shoes was at it's peak in North America.

The ZX 500 is a fairly basic all-round running shoe; when compared to it's later sibling like the ZX 8000 and ZX Flux. The Adidas ZX 500 features an upper made from 'mesh' fabric, with additional suede overlays for durability and stability. The 'mesh' fabric is lightweight and has tiny holes within it that enable air to pass through the material and helps to cool the foot. The ZX 500 comes with D-ring eyestays; D-rings are rarely used in Adidas shoes, round eyestays are far more common. The inner lining of the ZX 500 is made from textile. The midsole of the shoe uses EVA to provide cushioning, and is shaped to provide arch support. The heel area has a stabiliser design, and the outsole has deep grips to 'cater' for track and cross-country surfaces.

The Adidas ZX 500 has recently been released in a 'mi custom' edition: the 'mi' version can be customised on the Adidas official website, that enables the shoe to have a unique colourway for the: toes, overlay, underlay, toe box, eyestays, and lining. However, the Adidas ZX 500 is released in vast range of standard colourways; such as: Grey Charcoal / Black; Hero Navy / Grey; Grey / Black / Yellow; Sunshine Orange / White Vapour / Nomad Yellow; Clear Green / White; Solid Grey / White/ Blush Yellow; Surf Petrol Green / Yellow; Ocean Silver Metallic / Collegiate Royal; Night Flash Purple / Red; and Consortium Gray / White Chrome / Red.
