The Adidas Stan Smith is a tennis shoe, endorsed by former no.1 professional tennis player Stan Smith, that is Adidas' best ever selling sneaker. While the Stan Smith is still a functional tennis shoe - it was released in 1971 - it has now been replaced by more modern Adidas tennis shoes: like the Adidas Barricade. The Stan Smith is now part of the heritage range of Adidas products, and is marketed by Adidas as a casual and fashion wear product.
Due to the ongoing popularity of the Stan Smith, Adidas periodically released special editions of the shoe. One of the most recent special editions of the Stan Smith is the Stan Smith Gold Leaf. As the name suggests, the shoe features gold leaf, which is placed on the: tongue (portrait picture of Stan Smith); heel tab and signature. Adidas state that the gold leaf is 24-karat gold leaf, and due to the expense of 24-karat gold leaf, the shoe is more expensive than the standard Stan Smith. Adidas currently sell the standard Stan Smith for £74.95, and the Stan Smith Gold Leaf for £109.95. The Stan Smith Gold Leaf has the same feature list and design as the standard Stan Smith - they are exactly the same shoe - however, the Stan Smith Gold Leaf features a OrthoLite® sockliner insert: this product limits the development of odour. One problem with the Stan Smith is it is made from full grain leather, and it is difficult for the foot to breath in the shoe; therefore building up sweat and odour.
