Adidas Campus: low-top sneaker popularised by the Beastie Boys (1980)

The Adidas Campus was released in 1980, and was originally named the Adidas Tournament. The Adidas Tournament was designed to be a low-top basketball sneaker, but, it lacked the performance and cushioning of the Adidas Top Ten and Forum. Mid-top and hi-top basketball sneakers increased in popularity during the 1980's, and this eventually led Adidas to rename the Adidas Tournament the Adidas Campus. The Campus was no longer manufactured as a basketball sneaker, but, instead, was marketed as a sneaker for casualwear.

While the Adidas Superstar was endorsed in the 1980's by the hip-hop RUN-DMC, the Campus was worn by members of the New York hip-hop group the Beastie Boys. The Beastie Boys were formed in 1981, and the band primarily consisted of three individuals: Adam "MCA" Yauch, Michael "Mike D" Diamond, and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz. The Beastie Boys were originally a punk band, but, by the mid 1980's, they had evolved to become a rock/hiphop band. The Beastie Boys wild antics made the group infamous in the 1980's, but, it helped to develop demand for the Adidas Campus amongst teenagers and fans of the band.

The Adidas Campus is traditionally released in a pigskin suede upper, and has a similar design to the Adidas Gazelle. The Campus has a large midsole - due to it originally being a basketball sneaker - that increases cushioning and impact protection. Modern versions of the Campus have been released as skateboard shoes: due to it's large midsole and hard wearing pigskin suede upper. The Campus is designed with a rubber cupsole for durability and has a herringbone-pattern outsole to increase grip. The Campus has been released in a range of versions: Campus 80s, Campus 2, Campus Nigo and Campus Vulc.
