Beckenbauer tracksuit: the first Adidas clothing / apparel (1967)

The Adidas Beckenbauer tracksuit was released in 1967, and made history as being the first piece of Adidas apparel. Before the Franz Beckenbauer tracksuit was released, Adidas had only manufactured footwear. The tracksuit is still for sale, but it has been renamed as the 'Firebird' tracksuit. The tracksuit is released in a range of materials, such as: polyester and cotton. The tracksuit features: the classic Adidas three stripes design; a high collar; full zip fastening; two zip up pockets; and, by the 1970's, the trefoil logo on the left chest.

As stated, the Beckenbauer tracksuit was released in 1967. In 1966, Franz Beckenbauer starred for the West Germany national football team at the 1966 FIFA World Cup; they controversially finished runners-up to England. Franz Beckenbauer would later be nicknamed the “Der Kaiser”, and he eventually won the FIFA World Cup in 1974: captaining West Germany versus Holland in the final held in Munich. Beckenbauer also captained the club side FC Bayern Munich; who won three consecutive European Cups in the 1970's.

After retiring as a player, Beckenbauer coached West Germany at the 1990 FIFA World Cup; winning the tournament after a hard fought final versus Argentina in Rome. Franz Beckenbauer primarily played club football for FC Bayern Munich; after retiring as a player he managed the club and eventually became the club president. Indecently, Adidas own a 9.1% share of FC Bayern Munich. The image, shown above, was posted on the Adidas website, and displays a young Franz Beckenbauer wearing the new Adidas tracksuit in 1967.

Alongside the Beckenbauer tracksuit, Adidas have released Beckenbauer: football boots, sneakers and training shoes. On selected Beckenbauer footwear, Adidas have printed “Der Kaiser”; in honour of Beckenbauer's nickname.
