Q: Is artificial leather suitable for a shoe's upper?

  A: updated (15/03/2012)

It is, many shoes which are made to be cheap in price use artificial leather; another role artificial leather plays is for vegans and vegetarians, who want a shoe which looks like leather but is not. Artificial leather is also referred to as synthetic leather, and tends to be made from plastics - such as polyurethane film. Due to artificial leather usually being plastic, it has led to the slightly derogatory term of "pleather". Currently, it's believed that pleather materials can be up to three or four times cheaper to produce in comparison to traditional leathers. Some key benefits to pleather are that's easy to clean and maintain, it's durable and it's waterproof. One chief complaint is a lack of breathability, hence sweaty feet.
